Join us for a special screening of Edo Bertoglio's 1981 film Downtown 81 which portrays a day in the life of painter and street artist Jean-Michel Basquiat and the lower Manhattan art scene of the early 1980s. With cameos from New York underground legends like Debbie Harry, John Laurie, Fab 5 Freddie, Glenn O'Brien, and Vincent Gallo, Downtown 81 is an incredible document of a unique time in New York City with real and fictional elements. The film was shot before the meteoric rise of Jean-Michel Basquiat, and depicts his youth while he wandered the streets painting graffiti as SAMO.
The film will be accompanied by a solo set from Long Beach based musician, Smooth Jas. The screening will be donation based, with proceeds going to the space and performers.
Please be prepared to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a recent negative COVID-19 test to attend this event.
