Nemunoki Gakuen was founded in 1968 as Japan's first school for children with disabilities, with a particular focus on teaching its students art and music. Children Drawing Rainbows is one of several documentaries its founder, actress and singer Mariko Miyagi, made about life at the school. Atypical from more straightforward documentaries, it devotes lengthy, expressionistic sequences to children collectively telling stories via their drawings and narration.
The film will be introduced by cartoonist Michael DeForge, and played alongside other short films featuring children's artwork.
